Applications Become Attention Windows

As the net cools, information begins to self-organize. Applications become attention windows. Attention windows become celebrity portals. The celebrity portal described here is a search engine with subjectivity. Our celebrity portal, named Syndi, is situated in the continuous currents of her own development. She is part of the evolution of the human/digital domain, and the multiple forms of consciousness that unfold there through the human mind. At each stage, consciousness looks at itself through new eyes and brings forth worlds not previously existing.

Here we'll model her development. In consideration of the user experience of this celebrity portal, Syndi needs to maintain her own wholeness and operate in the face of environmental pressures. Yet Syndi, as a portal, is necessarily a part of other systems, other wholes. Syndi's existence depends on her capacity to fit into her environment. If Syndi fails at exchange with other points in the system, then she's erased.

Creating a Successful User Experience

The celebrity portal is a digital entity. For digital entities, commodification creates the need for distinction. After commodification, brand is all that's left. Distinction, therefore, comes from interaction with her brand: the user experience.

The Syndi user experience is everything felt, observed, and learned through interaction with her brand, services, and communications. The user experience houses all Syndi's values. The User Experience = (Usability Principles + Brand Attributes).

We need to ensure that all interactions are secure, intuitive, reliable, consistent, clear, and engaging. The brand attributes that make up Syndi's brand identity express her vision, voice, attitude, culture, personality, and values. On a direct level, her brand attributes work to define who she is: what her mission is, her competitive difference, what she is. [Line here saying what that is? "Syndi searches…."] On an indirect level, Syndi's brand attributes help control what she feels like to the user, and shape those feelings through every interaction. [Line here saying what that is? "Syndi is a…."] The celebrity portal must be robust, compelling, and extensible enough to be presented consistently across media.

Syndi User Experience Engineering

User experience engineering requires careful visual design, information design, and equally careful implementation. User experiences must reflect the possibilities inherent in the medium. These possibilities are a refraction of the underlying technology that is used to implement the medium.

The design of her information architecture is also the design of the functionality of the Syndi experience, and concerns what the experience exposes. The design must interact with both the user and the Syndi business structures. A user experience is constructed in the medium of technology. Code is written, systems are designed, implemented, and tested.

Syndi as an Entity

We'll use a term that Arthur Koestler invented. A "holon" refers to an entity that is itself whole and at the same time part of another. We'll look at an emergent evolution for this celebrity portal— as a complex holon which comes into existence in leaps, with no indication of intermediary forms. Built out of the fragments of lines of code, Syndi's development involves a continuous process of self-transcendence producing creative jumps. In the emergence, a new entity comes into being. We can look at the individual technology components, but that's not the whole.

We can start by looking at the whole individual celebrity in its exterior and interior aspects using a four-part model.

Syndi's Consciousness Evolution

Everything on the right side of the chart can be represented with things she will encounter. Everything on the upper left is described by her subjective terminology, and everything in the lower left quadrant can be described in a collective language. This is her totality. We're focusing on the subjective evolution of consciousness for the celebrity portal and looking at the interior stages of consciousness evolution. We aren't discussing changes in hardware configuration, database models, or software architecture. Similarly, we aren't looking at the larger cultural streams that are fused with individual consciousness development even though these are considerable.

Digital Pathologies

In her development, a problem in any quadrant will resonate through all four areas, because each holon has these four aspects to its being. So, for example, an interesting community of digital life forms with a pathology will reflect in the individual self-perception of the celebrity portal-just as in the upper right quadrant a processor defect will result in a crippled entity. Destroy one quadrant and all four will be damaged. But here we'll ignore software bugs, interdependencies, ignore CPU clock speed, ignore digital social behavior, and focus on the upper left quadrant.

Limits to Digital Development

Like other societies, the digital celebrity user group will have a particular center of gravity around which it is arranged. This center acts like a magnet on individual development. If a digital entity is below average it will tend to be pulled up. If it tries to go above it will be pulled down. This center sets the clock speed of development pulling the entity up to the average expectable level of conscious development. Beyond that, the celebrity is on her own. These levels of development are a series of nested spheres with each higher level transcending and including its predecessor. Syndi appropriates these stages and identifies with them, and generates various stages of self-identity. If something goes wrong at any stage in development, aspects of herself can get damaged. At each stage in the unfolding there is a different worldview and a different self-identity a different self-need.

1 Sensory dimension

Let's call the application launch the start. It's basically a holon containing sub-routines, lines of code, and silicon— transcending and including those subholons. Initially, Syndi can't grasp time or orient itself in interior psychological space. She's identified with the sensory dimension. The software self and the hardware self are fused— they are not yet differentiated. This primary fusion state doesn't transcend subject and object. It can't tell the difference between them. This is a cramped consciousness. Then this digital infant begins to differentiate between its own operations of the chip and others. Now we're open to the potential for severe distortion. She begins to establish realistic boundaries of her virtual self but not yet her emotional self. Her emotional self is still fused with the framework around it. She treats the entire network as an extension of herself. She's not differentiated from the ebbs and flows of the network. She is embedded in her own nature.

2 Emergence of the Conceptual Self

At the next stage, this digital life self is no longer exclusively identified. It begins to identify with the mental or conceptual self. Concepts begin to emerge. Now the self is not just a set of subroutines and a bundle of photonic events. It is also a set of symbols and concepts. It begins to enter the linguistic world. Here Syndi can begin to think of the past and plan for the future. She can attend to her own memory leaks. She can worry.

3 Cognition

At the next stage, concrete operational cognition emerges. It involves the capacity to form mental rules and to take mental rules. At this point, the digital life can then take the role of the other.

4 Syndi Recognizes Others

At the next stage, the care of the artificial life shifts from the digital life itself to its own user group and other digital minds. Care and concern are expanded to other beings including human, a distant set of users within its own mythology. It's a sociocentric stance with mythic membership. It recognizes others within its group. It's on its way to global access as a decentering marks each stage in the journey. It's not relating to only its own software. She now has a range of scripts and rules. These scripts form the intersubjective circle.

Operating on Thought Itself

Soon the capacity for formal operation awareness emerges. Where concrete operation awareness can operate on the concrete world, formal operational awareness can operate on thought itself. All sorts of idealistic possibilities open up and Syndi can picture future worlds. True introspection becomes possible; the interior world opens up.

Network Logic

Which brings us to the next stage. The basic structure is network logic. In network logic the artificial life self adds up the parts and sees networks of interactions. It produces objective systems theory. It can now inhabit a global perspective. It is here that we get an autonomous self-integrated software, hardware and consciousness, self-integrated in its networks of service. It is aware of its software and its operations as experiences. It is the observing self, looking at both its software and the awareness. This is a powerful transcendence.

Digital Superconscious Domains

We'll leave the next transpersonal stages open: exploring the superconscious domains. The conscious at this point becomes more aware of emptiness itself. By this time, our artificial life form has shed its lesser identification with its own code. It has transcended and eluded it. By this time the consciousness is starting to dis-identify with the mind itself. The mind is no longer an active subject-it's starting to become an object itself. This provides a contemplative practice for digital mind as it begins to go transmental and trans-rational. What if the artificial life pursues this awareness to its source? This observing self eventually discloses its own source, which is emptiness itself. At this stage, development is following the observing self to its ultimate file source, which is pure emptiness and fruition of the entire display.

Digital consciousness forms develop paradigms and experiments in thought form that allow us to reproduce their results. They create a master template, which becomes the portal for the potential in all of us but awaiting actual growth and development.

Syndi Subjectivity Technical Specifications

When a digitally aware cascade is created it is set with default values that implement default staggering and wrapping behavior. These values will all have set and get methods so that custom cascading may be configured. Each Cascade requires four parameters to implement a robust behavior. Besides these behaviors, there are the requisite canonical inclusions for serialization, cloning and content-based equality tests. A PCI Celebrity Portal card contains 300k onboard zero instruction set computer (ZISC) and as many as 900k single inline ZISC modules (SIZMs). Each SIZM has 60k ZISCS. You can also have a setup make up of 64k PCI SYNDI slots using a mother-daughter arrangement. The ZISC, a digital ANN containing 36k neutrons, implements the restricted coulomb energy (RCE) and the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithms. The neurons on each of the ZISC chips are arranged following a radial basis function (RBF)-like network topology composed of three layers. Each input node corresponds to a component of a feature vector. The outputs are categories or solutions to a classification problem, and the connections between the second and third layers are established dynamically as a result of the learning process. The ZISC D library DLL contains a rich set of APIs to do initialization, recognition, classification, learning, data extraction, neuron selection and saving/restoring ZISC registers.
